One of the best feelings is knowing of a band or artist before they’ve made it big and then seeing them grow into a household name. Well, that’s what I think is in store for singer-songwriter Mike Dignam. For the past five years, Mike has started to make a name for himself by supporting the likes of Lawson, Gabrielle Aplin, Lewis Watson and 5 Seconds of Summer on tour. In summer 2014, he also performed alongside McBusted, The Vamps and Scouting for Girls at Barclaycard British Summertime in none other than Hyde Park. With four EP’s under his belt and an album recorded and on it’s way, there can only be good things in store for Mike Dignam.
I first discovered Mike when I went to see Lawson perform live in March 2013. He instantly caught my attention with his up-tempo, catchy songs. After the show, I was able to meet him and he was as lovely as I imagined him to be. I purchased his EP ‘Paint’ then and there and I played it all the way home after the concert. To say I immediately fell in love with it is no understatement. With a mixture of slow, soothing ballads and funky head-grooving tunes, there is no way you couldn’t fall in love with this EP.
My favourite track from ‘Paint’ has to be ‘Keep Up Lady’. It is so good that it has gained the notable accolade of the 2nd most played song on my iPod ever (with over 2500 songs on my iPod and having had it for over 10 years, this is a modest achievement.) The groove created by the mix of guitar and drum rhythms can only be described as incredibly fun and catchy beyond belief.
The next time I had the pleasure of seeing him live was when he did his UK Park Tour in August 2013. This was a free tour during the summer in various parks up and down the country; this shows that not only is he a fantastic singer-songwriter, he is also a very generous musician, letting his fans see him live for free. It was a beautiful day in Cambridge and around thirty young people, including myself, were sat under some trees listening to Mike perform his favourite songs on his acoustic guitar. It was a really special day and I felt extremely lucky to be able to see him in such an intimate location.
Mike has had a great few years so far, but next in the pipeline is the highly anticipated release of his debut album. If his previous EP’s are anything to go by, we are in store for an amazing set of songs. Keep your eyes peeled for this man and remember his name, because he is sure to have a great career ahead of him.
